Critically Analysing My Own Photography

In this blog I will discuss and analyse 6 photography styles within my own photography. These techniques include deep focus, shallow depth of field, artificial lighting, lower quadrant framing, rule of thirds framing and levitation. PSA: none of these images have been edited (bar the rule of thirds which has had a slight change in colour added to it). These images will be edited and posted in the photos section of my page.

Deep Focus

Pictures Effectiveness:

This photo is quite effective as it has multiple elements to draw the eye and these are all in focus at various distances away.

Style:

The style of this image is deep focus.

Use of Light:

The photo makes use of natural light.

Exposure:

This photo is aptly exposed.

Technical Details:

ISO - 200

f/ - 5.6

Speed - 1/400 sec

Shallow Depth

Pictures Effectiveness:

The picture is somewhat effective in the style I was trying to achieve. The background could be more faded and subject could've been closer / shot at an angle.

Style:

This photo is in the style of shallow depth of field.

Use of Light:

Picture makes use of natural light.

Exposure:

It could be argued this photo is slightly underexposed (due to the off screen building directly to the left out of shot).

Technical Details:

ISO - 200

f/ - 3.5

Speed - 1/800 sec

Lower Quadrant Framing

Pictures Effectiveness:

This picture is somewhat effective. The scale of the building and leading lines of the building give off an interesting look. However, the subject is slightly out of focus.

Style:

This photo is in the style of lower quadrant framing.

Use of Light:

Picture makes use of natural light.

Exposure:

Subject is slightly underexposed.

Technical Details:

ISO - 400

f/ - 3.8

Speed - 1/2000 sec

Rule of Thirds

Pictures Effectiveness:

This picture is somewhat effective as it only just meets the criteria to be considered in this style. Subject is pretty small and there is a lot going on in the picture due to the branches. However, there is two wires that run horizontally along the image and split it interestingly into 3 sections.

Style:

This photo is in the style of rule of thirds.

Use of Light:

The photo makes use of natural light.

Exposure:

I think this photo is aptly exposed.

Technical Details:

ISO - 400

f/ - 5.6

Speed - 1/640 sec

Levitation

Pictures Effectiveness:

Picture is effective as it was easily edited to suit the levitation style, was not a crazy complex picture and includes a fake shadow that was added in to aid with the realness,

Style:

This photo is in the style of levitation.

Use of Light:

The photo makes use of natural light.

Exposure:

I think this photo is aptly exposed.

Technical Details:

ISO - 200

f/ - 5.0

Speed - 1/400 sec

Artificial Lighting

Pictures Effectiveness:

The picture is pretty effective in that the lighting is subtle enough that the whole photo is not compromised. The artificial light brings out the colour of the subjects eyes and the colour of the rim of the glasses. It also creates an interesting half and half look with the shadow on the other side.

Style:

This photo is in the style of artificial lighting.

Use of Light:

Soft box light was used on the right hand side of the subject.

Exposure:

I feel this photo is exposed poorly for two reasons. Firstly, the subjects jumper being white which is making it slightly over exposed. Secondly, even though it looks interesting I think the underexposed opposite half of the photo isn't what I was purposely going for.

Technical Details:

ISO - 220

f/ - 5.6

Speed - 1/60 sec
